Quick answer: 1 sq ft = 144 sq in = 0.1111 sq yd = 0.0929 m². 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft. 1 m² = 10.764 sq ft. 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft.
Flooring is sold by the square foot, carpet often by the square yard, imported tile by the square meter, and land by the acre. This guide gives you every factor you need, plus charts you can scan in a hurry. Our square footage calculator shows all of these units at once for any shape you enter.
Conversion factors
| To convert | Into | Multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| Square feet | Square inches | 144 |
| Square feet | Square yards | 0.1111 (÷ 9) |
| Square feet | Square meters | 0.092903 |
| Square feet | Acres | 0.00002296 (÷ 43,560) |
| Square inches | Square feet | ÷ 144 |
| Square yards | Square feet | 9 |
| Square meters | Square feet | 10.7639 |
| Acres | Square feet | 43,560 |
| Hectares | Square feet | 107,639 |
| Roofing squares | Square feet | 100 |
Why 144 and 9? Area units are squared. A foot is 12 inches, so a square foot is 12 × 12 = 144 square inches. A yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. Multiplying by 12 or 3 instead is one of the most common estimating errors.
Square feet to square meters (and square yards)
| Square feet | Square meters | Square yards |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 9.29 | 11.11 |
| 250 | 23.23 | 27.78 |
| 500 | 46.45 | 55.56 |
| 750 | 69.68 | 83.33 |
| 1,000 | 92.90 | 111.11 |
| 1,500 | 139.35 | 166.67 |
| 2,000 | 185.81 | 222.22 |
| 2,500 | 232.26 | 277.78 |
| 3,000 | 278.71 | 333.33 |
Square meters to square feet
| Square meters | Square feet |
|---|---|
| 10 | 107.64 |
| 20 | 215.28 |
| 50 | 538.20 |
| 100 | 1,076.39 |
| 150 | 1,614.59 |
| 200 | 2,152.78 |
Example: an apartment listed at 85 m² is 85 × 10.7639 = 914.93 sq ft.
Square feet to acres
| Acres | Square feet |
|---|---|
| 0.1 | 4,356 |
| 0.25 | 10,890 |
| 0.5 | 21,780 |
| 1 | 43,560 |
| 2 | 87,120 |
Example: a 75 ft × 140 ft lot = 10,500 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 0.24 acres.
Square inches to square feet
Multiply length × width in inches and divide by 144.
Example: a 30 in × 60 in shower base = 1,800 sq in ÷ 144 = 12.5 sq ft.
Linear feet vs square feet
Linear feet measure length only, for things like baseboard, fencing or decking boards. Square feet measure area. To convert between them, you need the width of the material, in feet:
Square feet = Linear feet × Width (ft) Linear feet = Square feet ÷ Width (ft)
Example: a 200 sq ft deck using boards 5.5 in wide (5.5 ÷ 12 = 0.458 ft) needs about 200 ÷ 0.458 = 436 linear feet of decking, before gaps and waste.
Square feet to cubic feet and cubic yards
Volume adds depth. For concrete, gravel, mulch or soil:
- Cubic feet = Square feet × Depth (ft). Divide inches by 12 to get feet.
- Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27
Example: 120 sq ft of mulch at 3 in deep → 120 × 0.25 = 30 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.11 cu yd.
Our concrete, gravel and asphalt guide walks through volume step by step.
Conversion mistakes to avoid
- Squaring the wrong number. “10 sq ft” is not the same as a “10 ft square” (a 10 ft × 10 ft square is 100 sq ft).
- Using linear factors for area. 1 m = 3.28 ft, but 1 m² = 10.76 sq ft, not 3.28.
- Rounding mid-calculation. Convert at full precision and round only the final answer.
